a not so manic monday
We didn't do much ebaying this weekend--the weather was bellisimo!!!! I love this time of year when we don't have to worry about skeeters and flies coming in the open sliding glass door. We spring cleaned the deck, patio, and garage--went to one measly yard sale. Also stopped by the used book store and picked up a few Nona Hengen softcover books from the $1 bargain shelf. I had never heard of her--but in one of the books was a newspaper clippping. She is a localish author who lives in Spangle in the family farmhouse. The illustrations are wonderful and the more I looked up about her the more I realized I've seen a couple of her books from time to time. One of the ones I picked up is selling for 51 smackaroos on Amazon. I'm not very ready to part with it yet, I am going to spend a Sunday afternooon reading through the babies in the very near future.

North of Forty
Yard saled Satiday--the first one was a sad little affair, I bought a microfiber duster for .75 to be perlite. I ended with a couple of bangs--an estate sale that I thought I was late getting to and a moving sale. Some where in the middle I picked up a couple of small civil war portraits in small wooden cases and a presciption box from a Cashmere, Wa pharmacy dated in 1910 for some worming medication for someone named Parker.

Pink Bike & Thrifting
Well I braved the cold and went to a couple of early morning sales yestiday. The wind was blowing so hard it tore my car door out of my hand. At the first sale a friendly dog came out to say hello--she was a sweetheart. I bought a coca cola polar bear cookie jar and some faux fiesta ware and then jumped back in the car and turned the heater up full blast. The second sale was held by a small group of college students who were delighted (as in look at the sweet old lady, isn't she cute) when I bought a "Wiley" glass. It's a large oversize drink glass you can take to one of the local watering holes on a certain night and get mixed drinks for cheap--I am really on the lookout of for one of the old style ones from back in day 19 aught 90 or so for myself but decided to get one and put it up on fleabay for kicks. At the same sale I bought an obnoxiously colored pink bike--I have been looking for a cruiser style bike for a long time. I took it straight down to the bike shop in town for a lube, oil, filter. "This bike has been painted pink" the bike shop service dude declared, much in the style of a CSI. "Yes, I know, thank you sir, please don't rain on my parade", thought I as I spelled the word pickle for him (why do they need my email addy anyway?).
In the afternoon we went thrifting over in Moscow. We ran across a local celebrity in the Antique Mall--Mary Jane Butters of Mary Jane's farm. She's very beautiful and very petite looking IRL. DH was on the hunt so didn't notice her. We bought a few things-something for me for my b-day and some small knick knacks to sell. Then on to the Hope Thrift Center and the Good Swill. We didn't buy a lot, we were just reconning-DH picked up something at the Antique Mall and turned it over to find a Good Will price tag still on the bottom. At the HTC I found a bunch of Paste Magazine sampler CD's and few books. We topped off the afternoon by going to dinner at Winger's so we could watch Duke v WV.

The Outlook for Tomorrow is Very Bleak
Eek, I'm searching craigslist and the free local online ads and tomorrow's sales don't look very promising. There are a couple of very nice sales posted for NEXT WEEK (a pox on those teases.) So I will probably concentrate on listing tomorrow...I'm selling some rodeo gear for my brother which I'm pretty excited about. One of the items is a pair of chaps he made...wonderful fringe and hand tooled leather accents--they are just yummy too look at. I also want to get some stuff up on Etsy, I have a tone of craft and vintage items that need a new home.
We turned off the heat (it being April 1st and all) and it's verra cold--the cats came tearing in without any of the usual necessary coaxing--there's a roaring hot fire going now but my feet don't seem to be getting the message. Inland Power sent us a complimentary box of energy saver light bulbs, sweet!

Spring Estate Sale~Saturday
Went to a pretty good estate sale--there was a lot of Roseville and Hull--nothing out of the ordinary, however there was some wonderful other small finds to be had. My favorite part of the sale was sharing a kindred moment over some "Cougar Beverage" Bottles with a girl who had her hair pulled back with a blue handkerchief. My favorite find was a blue collectible tin in the shape of an elephant. Cool beans.
(Of course, one or both of these items can be yours if you are quick and visit my ebay page!)

A round with strep throat~
Well, thank goodness I didn't turn off the TV yet--although our Cougs and the Boy Zags are done for the season. Anyway, I went down the Columbia River Gorge to visit my mom over Spring Break and came back with a miz-erable sore throat. Visited a couple of great consignment stores in Goldendale, WA: Annie's Corner Closet and Amy's Attic. Also went to an estate sale in Trout Lake, WA. Came back with a few treasures for the house and a few treasures to sell.

Worth The Drive-4 Miles Up 4 Mile Road
So, I was jonesing for a yard sale...it's too cold yet for there to be very many, the only one advertised said it was "worth the drive". It was.
I didn't buy the bus.

The Madness of March
It's kinda funny browsing thrift stores--I always see stuff like headless duck figurines and one eyed ceramic penguins. Who donates this stuff? When in doubt throw it out--however it would make a cool avant garde display if you bought a buncha of the fabulous merchandise. Here at Pickledaisy we are looking forward to the Oscars
and then we will be turning of the television for the summer. Weighing the household budget against the siren call of HBO
; March Madness
; and Jane Austen
/Cranford
stuff on Masterpiece Theatre always cause a bit of agony.

At the edge of my seat
Two excruciating games today--Zags v San Fran with the home team squeaking by with narrowly with a win...then the home home team Cougs, sigh, came very close to vanquishing the Huskies. If Klay had been on his shot it would have been a different outcome. Any given Saturday night. Senior night for the Cougs and we say goodbye to Nikolai. Go Cougs.
Surplus Stores
One of little things I love about working on a college campus is the surplus sales. The surplus storage area is a huge space filled with outdated computer components, athletic apparel, lab glassware, office chairs, bookcases, and all the other flotsam and jetsam you would expect to find at a public funded institution. It's dimly lit and has a concrete floor so it's like being in the biggest basement ever. My latest fishing trip resulted in my acquiring a mint green (think Martha Stewart) steelcase filing cabinet and a book on McCarthyism in America
.

Moriage
One of the coolest things about selling on ebay is all the little tidbits of knowledge you pick up along the way. Tonight I am researching a pair of Nippon dresser pots. One of them is a hair receiver. They are funny little rounded jars with raised bumps that remind me of sea urchin shells. The finishing technique is moriage
which is "a special type of raised decoration used on some Japanese pottery."

Howl At the Moon
We watched Wolfman-I wasn't too impressed, too much viscera, too little plot and character development. As yummy as Benicio Del Toro
is--there was no reason for chickapea to fall so in love in with him that she would ride across the moor in a fetching fur collared riding habit in order to shoot him point blank with a silver bullet.

Sunday, Feb. 21st
I watched an interesting documentary called The River Cottage treatment on the Sundance channel this morning. It was set in England and it involved a group of people who went to a farm to learn where exactly their food came from. The people were all non cooks and relied on "ready" meals (TV dinners on this side of the pond.) They were taken on a tour of the slaughter house after having fed and tended the livestock for a few days. It was surprisingly difficult for me to watch. I'm not a vegetarian. When I was growing up our beef came straight from cattle raised by my rancher grandparents via the deep freeze wrapped in white butcher paper. There is a movement afoot of self sustainibility. I keep going back and back again to Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life (P.S.)
book. It's interesting to me that in just generation or two how removed we've become from our food sources.
